PROJECT BRIEF

The proposed Unimas Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences is located on a piece of land hemmed within less than a kilometer distance between three prominent building landmark in KTLD Section 22: The Sarawak General Hospital (8-storeys) immediately North, Wisma Saberkas (8+12=storeys) to the South East and Impiana Hotel (8-storeys) to the North-West. Occupying 3.6 of a total of 11.3 acres of land, this relatively flat site is buffered from the heavy North-South and East-Wset city traffic by the existing sport facilities (2-storeys) fronting Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce on its West boundary and a highway reserve along Jalan Green to the South.

Residential lots enclose the North boundary and a mixture of residential and commercial buildings provide an undulating backrop to the Eastern skyline. Vacant and overgrown area immediatly North of the access road from Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce give the site an unobstructed view of the Sarawak General Hospital, a signifant institution for Unimas Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences successfully proven PBL teaching methodology.

This proposal is based on substantial observations and analyses of the site and the needs of the Faculty. The decision to develop an alternative solution to 9-storey proposal is in part a response to the design brief for a "simple, no frills yet timeless, energy efficient design with the appropriate climatic response to the design with the landscape".

The proposed Unimas Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences provides us with an excellent opportunity to develop an architecture that responds to the spiritual, psychological and physiological needs of individuals training for a highly demanding profession. The criterion for physical and mental precision in combination with a high degree of ethics call for a peaceful and sympathetic environment.
